Education

One of the challenges faced by every investor in Sierra Leone relates to the acute shortage of skills in the country. Koidu Holdings sees investment in education and capacity building as a long term solution to this problem.

Over the years, the Company has supported various education initiatives and will continue to channel financial aid in this direction.

Commencing 2011, Koidu Holdings will increase support to over $100,000 annually for vocational skills training and the award of scholarships to deserving Kono students at various levels.

  • Investing in the future In 2004, Koidu Holdings collaborated with the Pakistani Battalion (Pak Batt) deployed in Koidu under UNAMSIL, to construct a five classroom building for the United Methodist Girls School (UMC) in Tankoro Chiefdom. However, in 2006 the school was in need of refurbishment and when newly elected Paramount Chief Paul Ngaba Saquee V approached the Company to assist, we gladly donated Le 30 million in cash, sand, tailings and granite for this project. However, a brand new school building is about to be constructed for the United Methodist Girls School, with both primary and secondary school facilities.
  • Scholarships for School Pupils In the 2004/2005 academic year, we collaborated with the Diamond Dealers Association in Kono to award scholarships to 500 pupils from various secondary schools in Kono that scored an aggregate of 23 or better in their Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE). The scholarship covered tuition fees and learning materials. This initiative was again repeated in the 2005/2006 academic year.

  • Extending a helping hand to Gbense Chiefdom's children An amount of $5,000 was made available to a school for the destitute in Gbense Chiefdom, the Sia Abie Preparatory School.
  • Refurbishment In 2006 Koidu Holdings rrefurbished the Ansarul Islamic Boys Secondary School.
  • Supporting Tertiary Education KONSU has received support from Koidu Holdings on several occasions for the conduct of Summer Schools and other educational activities in Koidu. We also sponsored a UK based media consultant to contribute to the course on Mass Communications held at Fourabay College on 17 November 2010.
  • Student Bursaries In the 2010/2011 academic year, we awarded scholarships to 25 Kono students in various tertiary institutions across the country: 6 students from IPAM (Institute of Public Administration and Management), 8 from FBC (Fourah Bay College), 6 from Njala and 5 from COMAHS(College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences). A cheque to the value of Le 52,098,136 was accepted on behalf of the students and distributed to them by Mr Tamba Komba, the Deputy Director of Education in Kono.

  • Constructing a New UMC Primary School The United Methodist Church (UMC) Primary School built by Koidu Holdings at the Koidu Resettlement Village has 8 classrooms, an Admin building, an Assembly Hall, a library, 9 x toilets, a kitchen, and a stores building ,as well as 3 houses for teachers accommodation.
  • New UMC Secondary School Work on the United Methodist Church (UMC) Secondary School for Girls began in August 2011. The school will have the same educational facilities as the primary school and one house for teacher s accommodation. This picture shows the work on the foundations for the library.
