Agricultural Development Programme

Aiah Bindi And Philip Sorboeh on training at the University of the Free State in South Africa.

Koidu Holdings has launched an agricultural pilot project where we hope to empower local entrepreneurs to embark on small to medium scale agricultural activities. One hundred plots of land measuring 50m by 50m have been demarcated for the project. Seeds engineered for tropical conditions, and fertilisers and pesticides are being imported from South Africa. Koidu Holdings is financing the initial capital outlay and will provide access to expert advice in small to medium scale farming. Depending on the success of this pilot project, larger scale initiatives will be attempted.

Two employees, Philip Sorboeh and Aiah Bindi, were selected to manage the programme and were sent to the Centre for Agricultural Management at the University of the Free State in South Africa to attend a course on growing vegetables and managing agricultural programmes.

Local Business Development

Local carpenters provide roof trusses, doors and window frames for resettlement houses

In order to stimulate the local economy, Koidu Holdings contracts local masons and carpenters in construction activities. Under the guidance of Koidu Holdings' skilled construction personnel and with new tools having being provided by the Company, the improvement in the building quality in the area is gradually becoming noticeable.

Empowerment of Women

In Sierra Leone, a country where unemployment is at an all time high, basic job opportunities are scarce, especially for women. Recognising the positive contributions that can be made to the upliftment of communities by the economic empowerment of women, Koidu Holdings initiated employment of women in various positions within the company, ranging from nursing staff to IT, administrative, mining and diamond sorting.
