Infrastructural Development

Overview

Due to the limitations on basic infrastructure and services in Koidu and throughout the country, Koidu Holdings plays its part in the improvement of public facilities such as schools, churches and mosques, sidewalks and police stations.

With time and financial resources, the Company expects to be able to continue upgrading infrastructure in Koidu town and extending its influence to surrounding areas.

Road Refurbishment Programme

Koidu Holdings is continuously involved in the improvement of roads and infrastructure in and around Koidu. We provide a service to the community by grading the dirt roads, which become severely potholed during the rainy season. In addition, the Company provides tailings for road surfacing, free of charge, in an attempt to improve the quality and durability of the roads in future. Official requests from various sectors, including the UN, the police and traditional authorities, for tailings and waste rock for construction and maintenance are accommodated by Koidu Holdings.

To date, the Company has refurbished 5km of dirt road between Tankoro Junction and a 3 km stretch of road between Kanya and Manjamadu. Our latest effort was focussed on rehabilitating the Old Yengema road after illicit miners undermined the culvert leading out of Koidu to such an extent that the road collapsed. At the request of the Paramount Chief and local government, Koidu Holdings immediately set to work on providing alternative access route until the bridge could be repaired.

Koidu Holdings' most significant contribution to the upgrading of road infrastructure in the region is with the refurbishment of approximately 68km of road linking the Kono and Kenema Districts between Koidu and Tongo. A detailed engineering analysis was undertaken by Koidu Holdings with a view to improving access between Koidu and Tongo.

Before refurbishment began, the road from Koidu to Tongo could only be used by motor cycles and 4X4 motor vehicles, and the journey took at least 6 hours to complete. The route consisted of a bush track that was 3m at its widest, was overgrown and severely eroded. There were no bridges and only one concrete culvert, and the rest of the swamp and stream crossings were by means of palm logs.

Completion of the Tongo-Koidu road refurbishment programme has effectively re-opened trade between these two major population centres. Small villages along route that previously had little or no contact with the other parts of the country are beginning to benefit from the flow of traffic and trade.

Water

A borehole provides potable water for drinking and ablutions.

During the environmental impact assessment it was found that all of the water wells in the area were contaminated by human waste and were a major cause of health problems. Koidu Holdings undertook to provide all employees with purified drinking water.

As part of dewatering programme, Koidu Holdings drilled water boreholes for pumping clean water from depths of 100-150m below surface. This water is made available to the local community. In addition, the Company has drilled two water boreholes at the resettlement site, one of which is an extremely high yielding hole and which the Company intends pump to a reservoir to ensure continuous water supply for the community.
